Google Ads without the overwhelm: a local owner’s guide
Naveen Krishenan
Most local owners open Google Ads once, see a wall of tabs — keywords, bids, ad groups, quality score, conversions — and quietly close it again. The platform was built for full-time media buyers, not someone already running a clinic, café, or shop. So the account either never launches, or it burns budget on the wrong clicks.
You don’t need to master the dashboard. You need to get a few things right and leave the rest alone.
1. Bid on intent, not vanity
The clicks worth paying for are the ones already looking to buy near you: “klinik 24 jam near me”, “dental scaling Subang”, “car service Petaling Jaya”. These searches convert because the person has a problem right now. Broad, top-of-funnel terms drain budget and rarely turn into a booking.
2. Send clicks somewhere that answers the question
An ad that promises “same-day appointments” should land on a page that shows hours, location, and a way to book — not a generic homepage. The gap between the promise and the page is where money leaks.
3. Watch cost per result, not cost per click
A RM0.40 click that books a patient beats a RM0.06 click that bounces. Track the call, the direction request, the form — the thing that actually grows revenue. Everything else is noise.
If you only do one thing: bid on local, high-intent searches and point them at a page that makes the next step obvious.
4. Let the boring part run itself
The work that never ends — adjusting bids, pausing losers, scaling winners, refreshing copy — is exactly the work software is good at. That’s the part worth automating, so your attention goes to serving customers instead of babysitting a dashboard.
That’s the whole game for a local business: high-intent targeting, a page that converts, results-based measurement, and automation for the grind.
